I don’t want to think how built up the little seaside town of Mahahual in Costa Maya, Mexico must be now. I like to remember how it was back in 2003. The road through the main town was just a sandy strip with friendly locals selling brightly coloured blankets and other trinkets in make-shift stalls. Kids and puppies, scooters and VWs, golf carts and bicycles all puttering along their own path.

Following along the road, I remember how hot the sun was and, just when you think you couldn’t walk any further, the Swing Bar with its cold beer and even cooler music appears on the side of the road. There was always time to wade into the ocean, dodging translucent fish and wayward snorkelers. After cooling off a bit we would head off for our real destination. The Italian place. Luna de Plata. How clever, to chase the sun and live part of the year in Italy and the rest in Costa Maya, Mexico. We always knew we would have a good time there. The menu would change depending on if the shipments arrived or not. Meat was a bit of a luxury but whatever they served it was always delicious and the Sol served cold!

Our host Luca was so friendly, what a gem!
